Adding SWF Content to HTML using Adobe Dreamweaver

SWF files are made using Adobe Flash, an application that creates multimedia content including animation, sound and video. Most online advertising is created using Flash, as well as many content rich websites.

You can insert Flash content into your pages whether or not you have Flash installed. Flash files have a .swf file extension.

You can insert Flash content using:

  • the Common category of the Insert panel
  • Insert > Media > SWF
  • the SWF category of the Assets panel
  • the Files panel.

Adding SWF content using the Insert panel

  • Place the insertion point where you want the Flash content to appears.
  • Click Media from the Common category of the Insert bar, and choose SWF from the pop-up menu. Alternatively, you can use the Insert menu by choosing Insert > Media > SWF.
  • Both operations open the Select File dialogue box. Choose your SWF file and click OK.
  • The Object Tag Accessibility Attributes dialogue box will appear. Enter a Title describing your Flash content to help make your page accessible.
  • The Flash content appears as a gray box on the page with a blue tab above it.
  • When you save your page, you will be warned that files have been copied to your local site. Click OK.

When you add an SWF file to a page, Dreamweaver inserts code that detects whether the user has the correct version of Flash Player needed to play that file. If not, the page displays default alternative content that prompts the user to download the latest version of the player.
