Auto Page Numbers in Adobe InDesign

Using automatic page numbering

Use the Current Page Number marker on master pages to have the page number displayed on all document pages based on that master page. The page numbers on the document pages will be automatically updated whenever you add, delete, or renumber the pages in the document. It can be styled as any other text.

Adding automatic page numbers to a master page

  • Double-click the master page icon in the top part of the Pages panel to view that master page.
  • Where you want the page number to be displayed, drag with the Type tool to draw a text frame.
  • Type any text that you want to appear with the page number, e.g. the name of the publication or issue date.
  • Select Type > Insert Special Character > Markers > Current Page Number. The Current Page Number marker appears as the master page prefix.
  • If the master page is a facing page master, you may wish to repeat these steps to the second page.

TIP: The Current Page Number marker can also be added using the Context menu. To open the Context menu, place the text cursor in the text frame to hold the page number, and right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Mac OS) and select Insert Special Character > Markers > Current Page Number.
