Components of Adobe Acrobat Professional

Adobe Acrobat Components

The Adobe Acrobat suite (Standard, Pro and Suite) include the following components:

AdobePDF Printer

AdobePDF (Windows only) is a printer driver that you use to "print" to create PDF documents from any application. When you install Adobe Acrobat, it also installs the AdobePDF print driver (Windows only), which allows any program that prints to create a PDF file. However, this method should be avoided and PDFMaker used instead.

PDFMaker

PDFMaker (Windows only) is an Acrobat feature that operates within many business applications, such as Microsoft Office applications, AutoCAD, and Lotus Notes. When you install Acrobat, PDFMaker controls appear in the work area of the authoring application. Using PDFMaker within an authoring application involves clicking an Acrobat PDFMaker toolbar button or choosing a command on the Adobe PDF menu. It is not necessary to open Acrobat.

Acrobat Distiller

Acrobat Distiller converts postscript files to PDF documents and is designed for the conversion of complex page layout documents and documents with graphics or images that require compressing or resampling precisely.

Distiller offers extensive conversion controls for high-quality documents, particularly if the documents have postscript features or EPS graphics.

It also offers precise controls for compression, fonts, and colour management. Distiller manages PDF Settings, which control the quality and size of the resulting PDF.

Adobe Acrobat

Adobe Acrobat Professional is the main application of the suite, and is the subject of the Alpha Computer Consultants training courses.

It allows you to enhance PDF documents by adding interactivity through links, rich media and forms as well as password protection, annotations and bookmarks.

Acrobat also lets you combine PDF documents into one document and make simple text editing corrections. Adobe Reader is a basic version of this Acrobat application.

Using Adobe LiveCycle Designer (Windows only)

Adobe Acrobat Professional ships with Adobe LiveCycle Designer, a stand-alone form design application that is available for Windows only. It can also be purchased separately.

Adobe LiveCycle Designer has more advanced form creation tools than Adobe Acrobat Professional and offers more advanced features and controls.
