Using the Drawing Tools of Adobe Illustrator

Drawing lines with the Line Segment tool

Line Tool

The Line Segment tool is used to draw one straight line segment at a time. The line segments will not be connected to each other.

  • Choose the Line Segment tool.
  • Do either of the following:
    • Place the mouse where you want the line to start, then click and drag to where you want the line to finish.
    • Click once where the line will begin, then in the dialogue box specify the length and angle of the line. Tick Fill Line to fill the line with the current fill colour. Then click OK.

Drawing rectangles

Rectangle Tool
  • Choose the Rectangle tool or Rounded Rectangle tool.
  • Do either of the following:
    • Click and drag diagonally to draw the rectangle to the desired size.
    • Place the mouse where you want the top-left corner of the rectangle and click. Enter a width and height (and corner radius if it is a rounded rectangle), then click OK.

TIP: Press Shift while dragging to create a square. Press Alt (Windows) Option (Mac OS) while dragging will draw the shape from the centre.

Drawing ellipses

Elliptical Tool
  • Choose the Ellipse tool.
  • Do either of the following:
    • Click and drag diagonally to draw the ellipse to the desired size.
    • Click once where the top-left corner of the ellipse's bounding box will be. Enter a width and height for the ellipse, then click OK.

Drawing polygons

Polygon Tool
  • Choose the Polygon tool.
  • Do either of the following:
    • Click and drag to draw the polygon to the desired size. Press the Up Arrow and Down Arrow keys to increase or decrease the number of sides of the polygon.
    • Click once where the centre of the polygon will be. Enter the polygon radius and number of sides, then click OK.

Drawing stars

Star Tool
  • Select the Star tool.
  • Do either of the following:
    • Click and drag to draw the star to the desired size. Press the Up Arrow and Down Arrow to increase or decrease the number of points of the star.
    • Click once where the centre of the star will be. For Radius 1, enter the distance from the centre of the star to the inner points. For Radius 2, enter the distance from the centre of the star to the outer points. For Points, enter how many points the star will have. Then click OK.
