Connecting and Threading Text in Adobe InDesign
About Connected (Threaded) Text Frames
Text frames can be connected (or threaded) to other frames on the same page or on a different page in the publication. There are several features of text frames which are important to know:
- A text frame has an in port and an out port, which connect to other frames.
- If a text frame has an empty in port, it means that frame is at the beginning of a story.
- If a text frame has an empty out port, it means that frame is at the end of a story.
- An triangle in a port means that the text frame is threaded to another frame.
- A red plus sign (+) in an out port means that there is text which cannot fit in the text frame, often called overmatter.
Importing and Flowing Text Frames
- Select File > Place and select a text file.
- Drag on the page to place the text within a frame.
- If you have a red plus sign (+) in the out port, this means there is more text. Using the Selection Tool (black arrow), click on the red plus sign, then drag another box.
- Continue until all the text has been placed
